A few moments ago, I was forwarded a link to an article on CNN Money which covered the current unemployment situation in Cyprus. The article hits home some harsh truths, but also makes it very clear why we, at Desk&Co, need to keep pushing in the region, for the region.
Let’s start with the numbers as they’re the hardest pill to swallow. 25% pay cuts. 43% increase in unemployment over the last year. Companies are only turning over 10% of the revenue they were last year. These are details we’re all aware of, and we didn’t need any media outlet to tell us. But I’d like to draw attention to something it did mention, which brings us back to why and how we can help.
When interviewed, Constantinos Menelaou stated that “many of his friends are starting their own small businesses or trying to leave the country, as they see little hope of finding work at home”.
Elmos Neocleous, went on to say “We used to have 12 employees. Now we have 2 … There’s no serious income anymore.”
So to conclude, we either need to support entrepreneurs who will be able to create jobs or we’ll lose the creatives we have left, and established businesses are sitting with empty desks and lower income than ever before.
We’re here to help both, and can even help the creatives in running a freelance business for the time-being!
