I recently had the pleasure of leaving London for a couple of days to visit Manchester. I was on a fact-finding mission to understand how Manchester’s tech startup scene worked and compared to London’s Tech City. I was fortunate enough to be welcomed by Shaf Choudry of Tech Hub Manchester and Hector Kolonas of included.co, both happy to show me around and explain how and why Manchester’s startup scene is growing fast.
It helps when you know people. But where do you start when you don’t? I’ve made a quick list to help Tech City newcomers settle into the startup capital of Europe…
1. Get involved
It’s all about people, and fortunately Tech City has a vibrant community with many events hosted each day. The big one you’ll want to attend is Silicon Drinkabout, held at a new and exciting location around Shoreditch every Friday. Well over 100 startup-ers come together each week to unwind and meet new people. It’s a great forum to ask questions and start building your network.
2. Put yourself on the map
You’ve arrived! But there’s no fanfare and nobody knows who you are… List your startup on the Tech City News directory; create a profile on Angel List and f6s; sign up to the Dreamstake platform; leave a message on the Google Campus notice board. Be smart; use relevant keywords that people will find and people will start to recognise your name.
3. Join a co-working space
Co-working spaces are great if you want a quiet environment to work and the opportunity to meet other exciting startups. In London they’ll typically set you back around £100-350 (inc. VAT) per month — if you’re on a budget Google Campus’ cafe is a free alternative, if a bit noisy. Many host exclusive events for their members, covering everything from marketing to raising finance. Your very own included.co can help you find the co-working space in London, that’s most suitable for you!
