“Going Haywire” CoworkingChat Summary

This week’s #CoworkingChat topic was ‘Going Haywire – What do you do when things go wrong?’. Below is a summary of what was discussed in a concise and easy to follow format.

#CoworkingChat is an international Twitter conversation that happens every Tuesday at 4PM GMT, and is hosted by the lovely folks over at Suite Spotte (who also happen to be the first included Collective in Illinois).

Q1: What happens when the internet goes out at your coworking space?

  • SuperPixel Labs (Galway, Ireland) noted that they have local hot spots to dial into, or can tether internet from mobile phones, but thankfully haven’t had to yet as they just opened last week.
  • vi Collaboration Hub (Holmdel, NJ) has a backup WiFi channel ready to go, but if that were to also go down they’d also resort to hotspots or getting creative to ensure their members could keep working uninterrupted.

Q2: How about when you catch someone “lifting” something that clearly doesn’t belong to them?

  • SuperPixel makes it very clear that there are 4 cameras in their space, they also use key FOBs and cobot to track access.
  • vi Collaboration Hub have cameras, card keys and tracking systems in place, as well as a zero tolerance policy to revoke memberships.
  • ReadyWork (Manhattan, NY) also noted that they too would revoke access to their hub.
  • Suite Spotte (La Grange, IL) also have a strong zero tolerance policy on this topic, with key FOBs tracking access for their members who can enjoy 24/7 access.

Q3: How would you handle a member that just “doesn’t fit in” within the community?

  • SuperPixel notes that they vet members coming in, as it’s a 2-way street and the fit has to be right on both sides.
  • ReadyWork believe the key is dialogue and flexibility to try and figure out new approaches, but also said that sometimes it just isn’t meant to be.
  • vi Collaboration Hub also vet their members, making sure the fit is mutual, as community is key and they want to make sure that everyone is playing a positive role within the space.

Q4: How do you handle squatters taking up conference rooms & other reserved spaces?

  • vi Collaboration Hub and SuperPixel Labs both use software to allow members (and their guests) to access/book the meeting rooms. Preference and limitations are set depending on the type of membership.
  • The Candy Factory (Lancaster, PA) ask their members to be respectful of their usage and haven’t had too many issues in 6 years of operating, noting that if members feel vested in the community they’re less likely to disrespect it.
